A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF FORMER MISSISSIPPI REPRESENTATIVE AND WORLD WAR II VETERAN DAVID H. BENNETT, SR., OF ASHLAND, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXTENDING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.
WHEREAS, former State Representative David Holmes Bennett, Sr., 90, died at Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, Mississippi, Wednesday, February 15, 2012. He was born on May 15, 1921, to Thomas Miles and Corinne Garrett Bennett in Tippah County, Mississippi. He was a retired farmer; and
WHEREAS, David Bennett was a proud supporter and 1942 graduate of Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricu1ture; and
WHEREAS, he served as a Lifetime Director for Mississippi Farm Bureau and had served as President and on the Board of Directors of the Benton County Farm Bureau many times. He was a Director for MFA Oil Company and the Merchants and Farmers Bank of Holly Springs; and
WHEREAS, he was a Veteran of the World War II era, mustering out of the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. Representative Bennett was a strong supporter of the American Legion and was a Mason. He worked as a County Agent for the Mississippi Extension Service before starting his own farming operation, which is still ongoing. He served his state as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1960-1966 representing Benton County, and always remained interested and involved in politics; and
WHEREAS, he served as a Colonel and Aide de Camp to Governor William Waller; and
WHEREAS, he served faithfully in Ashland Baptist Church as a Deacon, Sunday School Director, and many other capacities wherever he was needed; and
WHEREAS, he is survived by one daughter, Dorajean Sanderson (Bobby); two sons, Richard Grisham Bennett (Vicky) and David Holmes Bennett, Jr.; one son-in-law, Harold Harris; four grandchildren: Miriam Lois Garner (Jesse), Richard Todd Bennett, Bennett Thad Sanderson (Jana) and Amanda Sue Harris; and seven great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Miriam Eugenia Grisham Bennett; his parents; one daughter, Deborah Sue Harris; two sisters, Eva Sue Melvin and Mary Wilkins; and four brothers: Thomas, James, Jack and Joe Bennett; and
WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this agribusinessman and dedicated public servant whose contributions enriched the lives of all his colleagues and fellow citizens: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of former Mississippi Representative and World War II Veteran David Holmes Bennett of Ashland, Mississippi, and extend the sympathy of the Legislature to his surviving family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted to the surviving family of Mr. Bennett and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
