MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

By: Senator(s) Gandy, Butler (38th), Fillingane, Jackson (32nd)
Senate Concurrent Resolution 594
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL LEGACY OF MRS. PAT S. MCINNIS OF WAYNESBORO, MISSISSIPPI, ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AFTER 31 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS OF WAYNE ACADEMY.
WHEREAS, after 31 years of service to Wayne Academy and the citizens of Waynesboro, Mississippi, Mrs. Pat S. McInnis has announced her retirement; and
WHEREAS, in the fall of 1970, a group of caring parents and teachers of Wayne County, concerned about quality education, met to discuss the formation of a new school, Wayne Academy. With a great leap of faith, Mrs. Pat McInnis, already a seasoned teacher of ten years, took on the role of English Teacher/Headmistress of the new school; and
WHEREAS, as the new school grew and expanded, adding staff and students with each new year, "Mrs. Mac," as she affectionately became known, remained the one constant at Wayne Academy. Mrs. Mac wore many hats over the ensuing years, serving as Advisor, Teacher and Counselor or just a shoulder to lean on if a student had a need; and
WHEREAS, as Wayne Academy added sports to its program, Mrs. Mac became a staunch supporter. She began clipping articles of the student athletics and their accomplishments and putting these bits of memory up in her classroom. This accumulation soon became known simply as "the wall." Many students began their school day or ambled in at break to quietly read "the wall"; and
WHEREAS, as the years progressed, Mrs. Mac was privileged to graduate many of the students who began the school. She remained to see many of these students attend college, come back to Waynesboro and teach, start a business of their own or even to serve on Wayne Academy's Board of Directors. Mrs. Mac not only taught during school hours, but helped any student who needed a little "extra" help. Wayne Academy graduates found that if they needed to, Mrs. Mac's door was always open to "check over" that college term paper; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mac earned many accolades during her stay at Wayne Academy. One of the most prestigious of these accomplishments was her entry into the Star Teacher Hall of Fame. A teacher must be selected at least ten times before induction. Mrs. Mac's exceeding this number stands to serve as a testament to the respect and love that students felt for her over the years. She was also recognized by her community as Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year. She served as President of the Mississippi Private Education Association; and
WHEREAS, in 2001, the President and Board of Directors of Wayne Academy held a dedication ceremony naming the Academy Library as the "Pat S. McInnis Library"; and
WHEREAS, Pat is a graduate of East Central Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi with a Masters Degree. She was married to the late W.L. McInnis who served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict; and
WHEREAS, after 31 years at Wayne Academy, the time seemed right for stepping down and enjoying life at a different pace. As the time drew close for Mrs. Mac to oversee her 29th and final graduation, she experienced a mixture of joy, sadness and pride. it seemed only fitting that not only would this be her last senior graduation, but her oldest grandchild would be a member of this final senior class and would be privileged to give the valedictory speech; and
WHEREAS, although Mrs. Pat McInnis will no longer be in a classroom every day, her service and dedication to Wayne Academy will continue to shine through the lives of all the students that God has allowed her to guide and encourage. It is fitting that we pay tribute to her and her career:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize Mrs. Pat S. McInnis on the occasion of her retirement after 31 years of service to the students and parents of Wayne Academy, and extend our best wishes to Pat and her family on this auspicious occasion.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Pat McInnis, forwarded to the Board of Directors of Wayne Academy and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
