A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION URGING THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY TO ENDORSE AN HISTORICAL DESIGNATION OF A CIVIL WAR VETERANS CEMETERY FOR UNKNOWN SOLDIERS FOLLOWING THE BATTLE OF MCLEOD'S MILL ON DECEMBER 10, 1864, IN LEAKESVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi and the Town of Leakesville understand that the irreplaceable historical and cultural heritage of Greene County should be preserved and protected for the benefit of the people and for future generations; and
WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi and the Town of Leakesville recognize the historical significance of Davidson's Raid and the Battle of McLeod's Mill on the history of Greene County and the State of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi is desirous of preserving said history for cultural, educational, economical and historical reasons; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville Board of Alderman, in conjunction with the Town of Leakesville, McLeod's Mill Organizing Committee, Jimmy King, and other interested parties have endorsed designating the final resting place of both unknown Union and Confederate soldiers as historically significant and worthy of preservation and attendant efforts; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville Board of Alderman intend to avail themselves of any and all Mississippi Department of Archives and History assistance afforded by Mississippi Code Sections 39-5-19 and 39-7-13 et seq:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby urge the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to endorse an historical designation of a Civil War Veterans Cemetery for unknown soldiers following the Battle of Mcleod's Mill on December 10, 1864, in Leakesville, Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Town of Leakesville Board of Alderman is encouraged to coordinate and complete any Mississippi Department of Archives and History requirements to effectuate this resolution in consultation with proper parties.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
