2016 Regular Session

By: Senator(s) Browning, Stone, Barnett, Dearing, Jackson (32nd), McMahan

Senate Concurrent Resolution 621

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE ASHLAND HIGH SCHOOL "BLUE DEVILS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH ROLANDA ROLLEY TIPLER FOR CAPTURING ITS FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 1997.

WHEREAS, the Ashland High School "Blue Devils" Boys Basketball Team defeated West Lowndes 60-49 on March 10, 2016, to win its first MHSAA Class 1A State Championship since 1997 and its second-ever; and

WHEREAS, DeAnthony Tipler grabbed the ball out of a West Lowndes player's hands with 2:30 left in the Class 1A Championship on Thursday.  He then dribbled down the court, blew by a defender and hit a layup to give Ashland a 53-46 advantage, the Blue Devils' largest lead to that point.  "It was," the sophomore guard said, "the game-changer."  It lifted the Ashland fans, those who helped fill Mississippi Coliseum in blue, off their seats.  It made the Ashland players embrace on the court.  Most importantly, it helped seal Ashland's first Boys Basketball State Title since 1997; and

WHEREAS, Tipler scored 23 points and Rodriquez Reaves added 13 as Ashland captured its second Championship in school history by defeating West Lowndes 60-49; and

WHEREAS, "That '97 ball was getting kind of lonely up there in our gym," said Ashland Coach Rolanda Rolley Tipler, who is DeAnthony's cousin.  "This means everything.  It's a small, tight-knit community, and we needed something positive to talk about."  From an athletics' standpoint, it doesn't get much better than this; and

WHEREAS, Tipler made 9 of 21 shots from the field with three assists and four steals for the Blue Devils (26-7).  He scored 14 of his points in a critical second half.  Ashland's Juwan Martin and Richard Brooks each added 11 points; and

WHEREAS, the 2016 Ashland High School Boys "Blue Devils" Basketball Team Championship Roster is:  DeAnthony Tipler, Rodriquez Reaves, Jamarqus Everett, Myles Jimmerson, Michael Mason, Keontrae Gibson, Ocquavion Agyekum, Juwan Page, Richard Brooks, Tavionne Stigger, Zion Elliott, JuWan Martin, Darrious Scales, and Coach Rolanda Rolley Tipler; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Ashland High School "Blue Devils" Boys Basketball Team and Coach Rolando Trolley Tripler for capturing its first State Championship since 1997, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Tipler for the team, Ashland Principal Erika Bare, forwarded to the Benton County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
