Senate Concurrent Resolution 626
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MURRAH HIGH SCHOOL "LADY MUSTANGS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH TANGELA BANKS FOR A THRILLING DOUBLE-OVERTIME 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, Murrah High School claimed its 10th State Championship in a double-overtime thriller on March 12, 2016, in the Mississippi Coliseum. Murrah was the old guard looking for its 10th Championship in Mississippi's highest classification. Callaway was the new kid on the block, playing in 6A for the first time since realignment against an old rival. A State Title was on the line, and one overtime wasn't enough; and
WHEREAS, in the end, Nya Irvin's layup with 23 seconds left in overtime was enough to put the "Lady Mustangs" ahead for good, and Murrah walked away with a 54-52 win in double-overtime in the 6A Championship. "We fought and fought," Murrah guard Melissa Creese said. "We just had to stay energized and motivate each other to keep it up"; and
WHEREAS, Callaway forced overtime with a bucket from the paint with one second left on the clock that tied the game at 39-39. Murrah returned the favor at the end of the first overtime period when Keimoya Walker drained a couple of free throws to tie it at 46-46. Walker led Murrah with 14 points and Melissa Creese picked up player-of-the game honors with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. "It feels amazing to win a championship in my last year," Creese said. "And to do it with a good group of girls and a great Coach like Coach Tangela Banks"; and
WHEREAS, the 2016 "Lady Mustangs" Girls Basketball Championship Roster is: Zephorah Jones, Jamaica Almonds, Alexis Williams, Nyeasha Fisher, Regina Sampson, Melissa Creese, Keimoya Walker, Emily Robinson, Kacey Bradford, Cianna Jones, Dianeysha McGee, Nya Irvin and Adrianna Bonds; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Murrah High School "Lady Mustangs" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Tangela Banks for a thrilling double-overtime 6A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Tangela Banks for the team, Murrah Principal Kennieth Green, forwarded to the Jackson Public School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
