MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2016 Regular Session

By: Senator(s) Parks, Barnett, Fillingane, Jackson (32nd), McDaniel, McMahan

Senate Concurrent Resolution 636

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CORINTH HIGH SCHOOL "WARRIORS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH KEITH GREENE FOR CAPTURING THE MHSAA CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, for the first time in three years, Mississippi has a new boys basketball Champion in Class 4A.  Corinth High School, with a gritty effort on defense and several timely baskets during an exciting fourth quarter, dethroned former back-to-back Champion McComb.  The Warriors won, 68-63, to capture the boys Class 4A title on March 10, 2016, in a thrilling Championship Game at the Mississippi Coliseum; and

WHEREAS, Corinth, which was supported by a large student section that made the 240-mile trek in the rain, was relentless throughout the first half, seemingly refusing to back down to the defending Champion.  The Warriors held a 24-23 lead at halftime despite shooting a modest 26.7% from the field, mostly because they forced seven turnovers, outrebounded the Tigers 22-19 (Corinth also grabbed 11 offense boards) and connected on 6 of 10 free throws.  McComb, in comparison, missed its only two attempts from the line in the first half; and

WHEREAS, neither team held a lead of more than six points in the second half.  The score was tied three times and there were six lead changes in the fourth quarter.  Corinth (29-2) became the only team to beat top-ranked McComb (29-2) this season; and

WHEREAS, Antares Gwyn's free throws with about 20 seconds left provided the game's final margin.  Gwyn scored a game-high 26 points.  His three-pointer with about three minutes left gave Corinth a 58-57 lead and the Warriors never trailed from there; and

WHEREAS, the 2016 Corinth High School Warriors Boys Basketball Team Championship Roster is:  Javen Morrison, Armad Wicks, Jon D. Warren, Jay Cobbs, Quentin Patterson, Dee Brown, Axavius Stricklen, Tameric Perry, Will Gardner, Antares Gwyn, Darius Harris, Jawon Shields, Tairek Johnson and Shyron Rodgers; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Corinth High School "Warriors" Boys Basketball Team and Coach Keith Greene for capturing the MHSAA Class 4A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Keith Greene for the team, Corinth Principal Dane Aube, forwarded to the Alcorn County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
