A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING THE PASTOR AND CONGREGATION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN MORTON, MISSISSIPPI, ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR SESQUICENTENNIAL (150TH) ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.

     WHEREAS, in 1860, a dedicated group of Christians met for the first time in a building on Tank Hill in Scott County, Mississippi, and formed First Baptist Church, Morton, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, today First Baptist Church Morton stands as a vibrant symbol of the will of God and continues to share the gospel to all through many ministries and to people of all cultures and ages; and

     WHEREAS, highlights of the development of this outstanding church include the following:

     ·  1892 - present church site purchased and white frame building erected;

     ·  1924 - brick sanctuary building erected;

     ·  1953 - East Morton Baptist Mission began.  Record attendance in Vacation Bible School of 302; workers/volunteers were available and made themselves available to help with the children and share the gospel with many children and their families;

     ·  1957 - East Morton Church formally established;

     ·  1959 - present Sanctuary constructed;

     ·  1983 - Family Life Center completed; and

     WHEREAS, the covenant of this leading church in the community is to maintain family and personal devotions and to educate children according to the faith of the church, and it is with great pride that we join the citizens of Morton in commending the history and future of this congregation whose charity and civic leadership is a matter of record:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and salute the Pastor and congregation of First Baptist Church in Morton, Mississippi, on the occasion of their Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary celebration, and extend our best wishes to these citizens on this great milestone in the life of their church.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Ministry of First Baptist Church Morton, forwarded to the Mississippi Baptist Convention and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
