Senate Concurrent Resolution 668
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAUREL HIGH SCHOOL "TORNADOES" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH MARCUS PRICE FOR WINNING BACK-TO-BACK MHSAA CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
WHEREAS, Laurel High School "Tornadoes" Boys Basketball Team's second title in school history made it back-to-back State Champions, giving a group of seniors a great win. The Laurel High School Boys Basketball Team played Neshoba Central in the 5A State Championship game on March 10, 2017, at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. The team was playing for a back-to-back State Championship Title as the team won the 2016 5A Basketball State Championship, which was the first title win in school history; and
WHEREAS, it was a game a year in the making and beating Neshoba Central 85-76 was a special victory. "We had been picked to lose the whole year," Coach Marcus Price said. "They shot the ball unbelievably. We just played great team defense"; and
WHEREAS, Neshoba kept it close until about four minutes left in the game, when Laurel capitalized on back-to-back turnovers and extended the lead from just five points to 13. The Rockets battled but couldn't cut the Tornadoes' lead. "We had to be resilient," Coach Price said. "Great teams make runs; we had to sustain and come back." Justus Day, Chayton York, and Ed-Rigo Harrington were all knocking them down from deep. Laurel's Je Vah Jones dominated this game for his team. Every time the momentum shifted in favor of Noeosha Central he was there to shift it back. He finished with 28 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter and earned him a player of the game nod; and
WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 Laurel High School "Tornadoes" Boys Basketball Team Championship Roster is: Anthony Jones, SG, SF; Je'Vah Jones, SG, SF; Dontario Drummond, SG, SF; Andre George, SG; Page Tyler, G, PG; Austin Lindsey, SG, SF; Rasaad Pettis, SG, PG; Colby Cooke, SF; Colby Cook, C, F; Milijah Windham, PG; Ferguson Jaylon, PF, SF; Jalen Ferguson, Jaquez Bester, SF; Jaquez Fountain, SF; Troymain Crosby, SF, SG; Charles Cross, SF, PF; Octavious Cooley, PF, C; Demichael Brown, C, PF; Charles Winston, PG, SG; Jontarius Henderson; and Darrius McCullum; and Head Coach Marcus Price; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Laurel High School "Tornadoes" Boys Basketball Team and Coach Marcus Price for winning back-to-back Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 5A State Championships, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents, and sponsors for extending their record of athletic excellence.
