A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING MR. CARROLL JOHNSON, THE SENIOR MILITARY VETERAN IN WINONA, MISSISSIPPI, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Carroll Johnson is the oldest living military veteran in Winona, Mississippi.  He was born June 6, 1910, in Bull Frog Corner, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson grew up in Lambert, Mississippi, graduated from Lambert High School, and was a successful athlete in all sports.  He attended Northwest Mississippi Junior College in Senatobia, Mississippi, participated in all sports and was honored as the first inductee into the Northwest Sports Hall of Fame.  Mr. Johnson attended Southwestern College, now known as Rhodes College, in Memphis, Tennessee, and again participated in all sports:  football, baseball, basketball and track; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson and his wife were married in June 1936.  They were married for over 50 years before she died in January 1987.  They had two daughters, Dixie Johnson Alexander and Georgey Carroll Johnson, deceased; and

     WHEREAS, during World War II, Mr. Johnson served in the United States Navy as a Sonar Technician on destroyers USS Conner and USS Wasmuth; and

     WHEREAS, his entire adult working career was spent working for Federal Compress in Belzoni, Mississippi, and Monroe, Louisiana.  He retired in the early 1970s and moved to Winona, Mississippi.  Mr. Johnson remained physically active riding his bicycle around the Town of Winona until the age of 95; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was born when Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States of America and James Vardaman was Governor of the State of Mississippi.  Mr. Johnson's life spanned the administration of 18 United States Presidents from Roosevelt to Barack Obama; 35 United States Attorneys General; and 27 Mississippi Governors from James Vardaman to Haley Barbour.  This family icon witnessed many historic events during his lifetime, including the invention of the automobile by Henry Ford, the Wright Brothers' first airplane flight and man's walk on the moon; and

     WHEREAS, it is with pride that we join the American Legion Post #52 and the citizens of Winona in honoring the service and contributions of a respected Mississippian:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and salute Mr. Carroll Johnson, the senior military veteran residing in Winona, Mississippi, and extend to him and his family our best wishes on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mr. Johnson, forwarded to the American Legion Post #52 in Winona and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
