Senate Resolution 13
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI "OLE MISS" ICE HOCKEY CLUB FOR WINNING ITS FIRST SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE HOCKEY CLUB TOURNAMENT TITLE IN PROGRAM HISTORY.
WHEREAS, a series of outstanding performances and late-game heroics resulted in a championship trophy as the University of Mississippi "Ole Miss" Hockey Club won its first Southeastern Conference Hockey Club (SECHC) Tournament Title in program history on February 9, 2020; and
WHEREAS, the Rebels entered the tournament in Nashville with a 10-5-0 overall record, earning the No. 6 seed in the eight-team tournament. The team started the weekend by giving No. 3 seed Florida Atlantic University (FAU) its first conference loss with a 5-3 result in the opening round. This upset carried the momentum to inch past No. 7 Auburn in the semifinal. With the game tied at 1-1, a walk-off goal by Braden Storner in the overtime period put the Rebels past Auburn and into their second consecutive SECHC Championship Game; and
WHEREAS, though the Rebels had championship game experience, losing the final to Georgia last year, they were still the heavy underdog with top-seeded Arkansas on the other side of the table. The Razorbacks held the best record in the conference coming into the weekend at 26-3 overall, and the team's only conference loss was to Ole Miss in December. Arkansas took the lead early after a highly contested first period and were able to keep Ole Miss in check for most of the game until Nate Sullivan tied the game with 15 minutes left. The Rebels came back just moments after to take the lead, and Cal Lavery put the Rebels up on a goal with 11 minutes left in the game. Lavery picked up the puck at center ice and beat Arkansas' defenders on a two-on-one break to score the winning goal; and
WHEREAS, Ryan Troy (Goalie) recorded 110 saves in the tournament and delivered one of his best performances in the final game. Troy said the defense was crucial to the Rebels' unexpected run over the weekend. Veteran Cole Chatham said that even when the team was down early, they were confident they would rally to get the win; and
WHEREAS, the University of Mississippi Hockey Club is a Division III member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The Rebels are also a member of the Southeastern Collegiate Hockey Conference; and
WHEREAS, the University of Mississippi "Ole Miss" Ice Hockey Club Roster is: Cole Chatham, F; Conor Huie, F; Patrick Manser, F; Nathan Sullivan, D; Marcus Eldredge, F; Kurt Lindhorst, D; Patrick Knott, F, Nathan Pawlow, F; Brady Zegras, F; Danny Mulligan, D; Harris Milson, F; Anthony Pellegrino, F, (Organizer); Cal Lavery, F; Connor Baker, F; Tanner Bailey, F; Brett Dougherty, F; Gray Erwin, D; Lawrence Gerson, F; Braden Storner, D; Scott Harlin, F; Quinn Pichel, F; Gage Young, F; Ben Mitzelfeld, F; Ryan Troy, G; Connor McMahon, G; Connor Storner, D; John Witwer, D; and Cade Shepard, D; Head Coach Josh Herbert; Assistant Coaches Jon Feavel, J.D. Yeaton, and Equipment Manager, Michael Yeaton; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these university student athletes who have brought honor to their university, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the University of Mississippi "Ole Miss" Ice Hockey Club for winning its first Southeastern Conference Hockey Club Tournament Title in program history, and extend our best wishes to the team for future successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Ole Miss Chancellor Glenn Boyce, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
