A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING DR. LARRY L. JOHNSON FOR 46 YEARS OF DEDICATED CHRISTIAN SERVICE AS CHAPLAIN OF TOUGALOO COLLEGE.

     WHEREAS, we join the students, faculty, administration and alumni of Tougaloo College in honoring Dr. Larry L. Johnson for 46 years of dedicated Christian counseling, leadership and worship as Chaplain of Tougaloo College; and

     WHEREAS, from 1972-2018 Chaplain Johnson had the following responsibilities at Tougaloo:

     ·  Plan, develop and implement a comprehensive religious life program that encourages and sustains spiritual/faith formation of students, faculty and staff, and promote academic achievement of students;

     ·  Provide counseling services for students, faculty and staff;

     ·  Plan and conduct weekly worship services for a religiously diverse college community; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson has the following professional experience:  1989-2018, Associate Professor of Religion (Tenured); 2002-2016, Director, Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning/SACSCOC Liaison Office; 1988-1994, Vice President for Student Affairs; 1983-1989, Assistant Professor of Religion; 1983-1984, Department Chair, Afro-American Studies; 1982-1985, Assistant to the Dean of Students; 1972—1983, Instructor of Religion; 1972—1976, Director of the Rust, Tougaloo UNCF; and 1972-2018, Member of the College Counseling Center Staff; and

     WHEREAS, his professional civic affiliations include:

     ·  Board of Trustees, Central Mississippi Health Services;

     ·  Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE);

     ·  Central Mississippi Sickle Cell Foundation, Board Member and Vice President, 1994-2003;

     ·  Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development;

     ·  Mississippi Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development;

     ·  Southern Association for Institutional Research;

     ·  Mississippi Association for Institutional Research;

     ·  American Counseling Association;

     ·  Phi Delta Kappa (Professional Association for Educators);

     ·  Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society;

     ·  Junior Achievement of Mississippi;

     ·  National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson's honors and recognitions include:

     ·  Century of Excellence Award, Undergraduate Leadership and Religion, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., 2011;

     ·  Mississippi Humanities Council Teacher of the Year Award, 2000;

     ·  Phi Delta Kappa Service Award, Utica Chapter;

     ·  Teacher of the Year in the Humanities, 1983;

     ·  Outstanding Young Men of America, 1979;

     ·  Essie B. Taget Scholarship Recipient, Phillips School of Theology, 1972; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend the Christian leadership of this dedicated professor who has reflected the highest credit to his college, his community, his Lord and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize Dr. Larry L. Johnson for 46 years of dedicated Christian service as Chaplain of Tugaloo College, and extend to Dr. Johnson and his family our best wishes in his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Larry Johnson, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of Tougaloo College, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
