Senate Resolution 5
(As Adopted by Senate)
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING THE BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADERSHIP OF MICHAEL JOE CANNON OF GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, Greenwood businessman Michael Joe Cannon reported that a combination of timing, location and finances led to his decision to purchase and reopen the south Jackson Nissan dealership. The Greenwood businessman expects to reopen the dealership February 8, 2010, eventually employing 65 people or more; and
WHEREAS, the dealership is Cannon's fifth new car lot. He has a Nissan and a General Motors dealership in Greenwood, a Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Cleveland, and another GM dealership in Oxford. In addition, he has used car lots in Calhoun City and Grenada; and
WHEREAS, Michael Joe Cannon is President of Cannon Motor Company; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon's purchase was greeted with appreciation from business and government leaders hopeful of a resurgence along U.S. Highway 80. The reopening of the dealership is hoped to have a ripple effect for the area. The Hinds County Economic Development District reported the dealership had $30 Million in annual sales under the prior ownership, so its reopening will be a boost to tax revenues; and
WHEREAS, in 1986, after the death of his father, Michael Joe Cannon left a career coaching football to assume the responsibilities at his family's automotive dealership in Calhoun City, with intentions of returning to coaching. He developed a passion for the automotive business and within two years opened a second location in Grenada. Since then, he expanded with four more dealerships carrying franchise brands including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, Nissan, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon is excited about the opportunity to expand into the Jackson area and bring his original trademark slogan "Nobody beats a Cannon deal" to the south Jackson Nissan dealership "On the Hill"; and
WHEREAS, Cannon Motor Company presently employs 172 employees in Greenwood, Cleveland, Oxford, Calhoun City and Grenada; and
WHEREAS, Michael Cannon's civic contributions include: President Chamber of Commerce; President Boys and Girls Club; Member of Rotary Club and Board Member of the Mississippi Automobile Dealers Association; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the contributions of this Mississippi businessman whose energy will support economic development in several communities in the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and salute the business and civic leadership of Michael Joe Cannon of Greenwood, Mississippi, and extend our best wishes and thanks for his contributions to the economic development of our state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Michael Joe Cannon, forwarded to the Mississippi Automobile Dealers Association and the Mississippi Development Authority and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
