A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND SENATOR TONY SMITH FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE.

     WHEREAS, Senator Tony Smith is retiring from the Mississippi Senate to run for higher office after serving four years in the Senate (2012-2015); and

     WHEREAS, Senator Tony Smith is a man of integrity and hard work.  As a former school board member he has a hands-on knowledge of Mississippi's school administrative laws and school funding provisions, and there is an acknowledged respect of our esteemed colleague, gentleman and enlightened lawmaker; and

     WHEREAS, Tony Smith currently serves as the Senator from District 47 in the Mississippi Senate, which is comprised of parts of Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River and Stone Counties; and

     WHEREAS, in the Senate, Tony serves as Vice Chairman of the Local and Private Committee, and also serves on the Education, Finance, Highways, Insurance, Public Health and Welfare and Public Property Committees; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Smith has been a strong supporter of education as a key component to economic development in our state, and advocated a uniform election process for all local school boards in our state to bring clarity and attention to the selection of these important local officials; and

     WHEREAS, he is the owner of Stonewall's Barbecue and Catering and often treated the Senate at functions including the annual legislative fundraiser for the veterans organizations.  He is an active member of the Greater Picayune Chamber of Commerce and the Picayune Main Street Association and has supported partnerships between the state and local leaders to attract new business and industry to Mississippi.  He has also been an active member of the Mississippi Restaurant Association, the Mississippi School Boards Association and the National Barbecue Association and is a member of the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association; and

     WHEREAS, Tony is married to Angie Traylor.  Their children are Lauren (Evan) Steil, Alexis and Addison, and their grandchildren are Gracie and Finley.  He is a member of the Christian Church; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Smith's service has been marked by his commitment to success and recognized leadership, sound judgment and fairness.  He has set the highest standard in all of his many roles, as a father, husband, businessman, citizen, statesman and leader in the Mississippi Senate and as a true friend:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and recognize Senator Tony Smith, whose outstanding service enriched everyone with whom he was associated, and we wish Tony and his family much success in their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Senator Tony Smith and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
