A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BRANDON HIGH SCHOOL "LADY BULLDOGS" VOLLEYBALL TEAM AND COACH KELSA WALKER FOR WINNING THE 2021 MHSAA STATE VOLLEYBALL 6A CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, on October 23, 2021, the Brandon High School "Lady Bulldogs" Girls Volleyball Team led by Head Coach Kelsa Walker won the 2021 Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) State Volleyball Class 6A State Championship; and

     WHEREAS, the week before Brandon beat the Greyhounds of Ocean Springs 3-1 to win the South State 6A championship title and advance to the State Championship game; and

     WHEREAS, two athletes received special awards at the game.  Lillie Grace Garrett received the Scholar Athlete for South State and Abbi Rogers was awarded the MVP of the Championship game.  Another special award for a Brandon player was to Sunni Sheppard who was selected earlier as one of fifty in the nation as the All-American picked by Max Prep.  Sheppard is the captain for the Lady Bulldogs team;

     WHEREAS, Oxford Warriors came on strong winning the first game 25-19 and the second game 25-22, but with their backs to the wall, Brandon had to win the next three games to win the championship.  In the third game, Brandon just got better as they beat the Warriors 25-21.  Game four showed Brandon playing harder and winning that game 25-20.  For game five, it was up to either team to win all.  The Lady Bulldogs came out determined to win the game.  "They remained focused and locked in as they have all season," said Kelsa Walker, Head Coach for the Lady Bulldogs.  In the fifth game, Brandon powered their efforts and defeated the Warriors 15-11 to win the State 6A Title Championship; and

     WHEREAS, in the last four years, Brandon has won three championship titles.  Brandon won titles in 2017, 2018 and state runners-up in 2020.  "These girls know what it is to lose the state playoffs (2020)," Walker said; and

     WHEREAS, Lady Bulldog coaches are Kelsa Walker, Head Coach,  Karley Nichols and Obadiah Montgomery.  Kelsa Walker is entering her 8th season as Head Coach for the Brandon High School Volley Team.  Coach Walker received her Bachelor's Degree from Delta State University and her Master's Degree from Mississippi Valley State University.  She has an overall record of 185-43 win/loss as the Brandon High School Volleyball Head Coach.  Under Walker's leadership, Brandon High School Volleyball Team won back to back State Championships in the 2017-2018 season and 2018-2019 season and won the 2020-2021 South State Championship.  Her Brandon High School Volleyball teams have won four consecutive Class 6A Region 6 Championships.  Coach Walker was selected as the 2017-1018 Clarion Ledger Volleyball Coach of the Year and Finalist for the Mississippi Coach of the Year.  She was the 2018-2019 National Federation of High Schools Mississippi Volleyball Coach of the Year, as well as, a MAC Mississippi South All-Star Coach.  Coach Walker serves on the MAC Volleyball Committee and SMAC Committee; and

     WHEREAS, team members include:  Lauren McLamore, Emma Levingston, Sunni Sheppard, Jayne Bass, Kameron Jordan, Brianna Shivers, Abigail Rogers, Lillie Grace Garrett, Lauren Entremont, Campbell Herrington, Brooke Bankston, Reagan Enis, Addison Campbell Lee, Breanna Cooper, Jolee Gibson, Kallie Johnson, Emily Davis, Fisher Enis, Avery Power, Taylor Shane Parker, Chloe Jenkins and Natalie Bartholomew; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Brandon High School "Lady Bulldogs" Volleyball Team and Coach Kelsa Walker for winning the 2021 MHSAA State Volleyball 6A Championship and express to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for continued success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Kelsa Walker for the team and Brandon Principal Bryan Marshall, forwarded to the Rankin County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
