A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to direct the department of public safety to collect, maintain, and annually publish statistics related to the discharge of firearms by law enforcement officers.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  G.S. 143B‑904(a) reads as rewritten:

"(a)       In addition to its other duties, the Department of Public Safety shall collect, maintain, and annually publish publish, itemized by law enforcement agency, the number of deaths, by law enforcement agency, (i) times law enforcement officers discharged their firearms in the course and scope of their official duties for purposes other than training and (ii) deaths resulting from the use of any deadly force by law enforcement officers in the course and scope of their official duties."

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective January 1, 2016, and applies to the use of firearms by law enforcement officers on or after that date.
