A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to direct the department of public instruction to examine and broaden, if necessary, the courses offered to high school students in career and technical education.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  The Department of Public Instruction shall examine data on the enrollment of high school students in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses to determine the distribution of student enrollment by gender in each program area. In doing so, the Department shall determine whether a particular program area has enrollment in CTE courses that is predominately representative of one gender of students. The Department shall adjust CTE course offerings, if necessary, to ensure that a broad variety of CTE courses are available within each program area to encourage participation by both female high school students and male high school students.

SECTION 2.  The Department of Public Instruction shall report on the distribution of student enrollment by gender of high school students in CTE courses and any actions taken by the Department to broaden the variety of CTE courses offered, as required by Section 1 of this act, to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee on or before March 15, 2014.

SECTION 3.  This act is effective when it becomes law.
