SYNOPSIS
Increases county prosecutor salaries by set amount over multiple years, and thereafter provides for annual salary cost of living adjustment.

An Act concerning county prosecutor compensation and amending N.J.S.2A:158-10.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. N.J.S.2A:158-10 is amended to read as follows:
2A:158-10. a. (1) County prosecutors shall receive annual salaries to be fixed by the governing body of the county at [$153,000 beginning on January 1, 2008 and $165,000] $170,000 beginning on January 1, [2009 and thereafter] 2016, at $175,000 beginning on January 1, 2017, and at $180,000 beginning on January 1, 2018.
(2) The salaries of county prosecutors, beginning on January 1, 2019 and annually thereafter, shall be subject to a cost of living adjustment, calculated as the average change in the Consumer Price Index during the preceding calendar year for all urban consumers, not seasonally adjusted for all items, in the metropolitan statistical areas that encompass New Jersey, as reported by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
b. There shall be appropriated annually to the Department of Community Affairs for payment to each county for additional salary costs resulting from the increase in the salary of county prosecutors an amount equal to the amount by which the annual salary paid to the county prosecutor under this section exceeds $100,000.00.

2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill would increase the salaries of all county prosecutors. Their salaries would be annually increased by $5,000 for three consecutive years, beginning on January 1, 2016. Salaries would rise to $170,000 in this first year, $175,000 in 2017, and $180,000 in 2018.
Thereafter, beginning on January 1, 2019 and continuing annually, the salaries would be subject to a cost of living adjustment. This adjustment would be calculated as the average change in the Consumer Price Index during the preceding calendar year for all urban consumers, not seasonally adjusted for all items, in the metropolitan statistical areas that encompass New Jersey, as reported by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
