     Permits use of digital meters in certain autocabs and advertising within and upon autocabs.

An Act concerning regulation of autocabs and supplementing Title 48 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    If a municipality requires an autocab fare to be charged based upon the use of an autocab meter, then the owner, operator, or driver of an autocab may calculate the autocab's metered fares by using a digital meter available through a wireless telephone or electronic communication device that uses global positioning technology to track the distance that the autocab travels.

 

     2.    The owner of an autocab may display, within the autocab and upon the body of the autocab, advertisements to the extent that the advertisements do not impair the operator's or driver's ability to safely operate the autocab.

 

     3.    This act shall take effect on the first day of the sixth month after enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill provides that if a municipality requires an autocab fare to be charged based upon the use of an autocab meter, then the owner, operator, or driver of the autocab is permitted to calculate the autocab's metered fares by using a digital meter available through a wireless telephone or electronic communication device that uses global positioning technology to track the distance that the autocab travels.

     Under the bill, the owner of an autocab is permitted to display advertisements within the autocab and upon the body of the autocab so long as the advertisements do not impair the operator's or driver's ability to safely operate the autocab.
