STATEMENT

This bill makes a supplemental appropriation of $30,000,000 from the General Fund to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to fund the expansion and renovation of clinical facilities at the New Jersey Dental School.  The New Jersey Dental School provides critical oral health care to low-income underserved residents of the State and trains dental health professionals to provide care for these residents.  For this underserved population, which includes geriatric, pediatric, medically-compromised, and developmentally disabled persons, UMDNJ is the State's major resource for essential oral health care.  The school, however, is unable to meet the demand for services as the clinical facilities are too small, outdated, and unable to accommodate patient needs.

This appropriation will enable the New Jersey Dental School to expand programs to address the shortage of pediatric dentists and other oral health care professionals and to expand the services provided to individuals who are unable to seek care elsewhere.
