     Provides unemployment benefits for certain veterans.

An Act providing unemployment benefits for certain veterans and supplementing Title 43 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Notwithstanding any other provisions of law, any individual who is an honorably discharged veteran, as defined in P.L.1947, c.263, c.1 (C.38:18A-1 et seq.), who is unemployed during the 52 week period following the honorable discharge, as provided in subsection (m) of R.S.43:21-19, shall be entitled to receive unemployment benefits under R.S.43:21-1 et seq. for  the maximum total amount of 26 times the individual's weekly benefit rate in any benefit year, regardless of the number of base weeks worked or the amount of contributions paid by the individual or any employer of the individual.

 

     2.    The unemployment benefits provided pursuant to section 1 of this act shall supplement the benefits payable to ex-service members pursuant to 5 U.S.C. s.8501 et seq., so that the maximum total benefit amount of State and federal unemployment benefits received is 26 times the individual's weekly benefit rate in any benefit year.  The benefits paid pursuant to section 1 of this act shall not be paid for any week which occurs prior to the individual exhausting benefits paid pursuant to 5 U.S.C. s.8501 et seq.

 

     3.    This act shall take effect 60 days after enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill provides qualified unemployed honorably discharged veterans with 26 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits regardless of the number of base weeks worked or the amount of contributions paid by the individual or any employer of the individual.  The 26 week State benefit will supplement the benefits payable to ex-service members pursuant to the federal law and will not be paid to an individual until these benefits are exhausted.
