SYNOPSIS
Requires the supervisor of a school bus driver to inspect the school bus for pupils remaining at the end of the transportation route.

An Act requiring the supervisor of a school bus driver to inspect the school bus for certain pupils and amending and supplementing P.L.2007, c.77.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Section 1 of P.L.2007, c.77 (C.18A:39-28) is amended to read as follows:
1. A school bus driver and the supervisor of the school bus driver shall visually inspect the school bus to which [he] a school bus driver is assigned at the end of the transportation route to determine that no pupil has been left on the bus. For the purposes of this act, "school bus" means every motor vehicle operated by, or under contract with, a public or governmental agency, or religious or other charitable organization or corporation, or privately operated for compensation for the transportation of children to or from school for secular or religious education, which complies with the regulations of the Department of Education affecting school buses, including "School Vehicle Type I" and "School Vehicle Type II" as defined pursuant to R.S.39:1-1.

2. (New section) The Commissioner of Education shall impose a monetary penalty of $1,000 against a school district that owns and operates its own school buses or a school bus contractor in the event that a pupil is left on a school bus at the end of the transportation route.
3. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill requires the supervisor of a school bus driver to inspect the school bus at the end of the transportation route to determine that no pupils have been left on the school bus. Currently, only the school bus driver is required to inspect the school bus for pupils at the end of his transportation route.
Under the bill, the Commissioner of Education will impose a monetary penalty of $1,000 against a school district that owns and operates its own school buses or a school bus contractor in the event that a pupil is left on a school bus at the end of the transportation route.
