SYNOPSIS
Prohibits candidate's relative from serving as candidate's campaign treasurer.
CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
As introduced.
An Act prohibiting the relative of a candidate from serving as the campaign treasurer of that candidate and supplementing Title 19 of the Revised Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Notwithstanding any other rule or law to the contrary, no relative of a candidate shall serve as that candidate's campaign treasurer.
As used in this section:
"candidate" shall mean as defined in paragraph (1) of subsection c. of section 3 of P.L.1973, c.83 (C.19:44A-3), as amended and supplemented; and
"relative" shall mean a father, mother, aunt, uncle, husband, wife, partner in a civil union couple or domestic partner, first cousin, child, brother or sister.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
Current law allows a relative of a candidate to serve as that candidate's campaign treasurer. This bill will change current law so that no relative of a candidate would be permitted to serve as that candidate's campaign treasurer. "Relative," as used in this bill, means a father, mother, aunt, uncle, husband, wife, partner in a civil union couple or domestic partner, first cousin, child, brother or sister.
This bill is necessary to address recent cases where a relative serving as a candidate's treasurer has lead to campaign funds being used for personal purposes.
