STATEMENT

This bill requires all State, county, and municipal public entities, including school districts, to set all printers and computers to default to fonts that use the least amount of ink and paper in order to reduce printing costs by conserving ink and paper.

The selection of certain fonts will reduce paper usage and printing costs because some fonts use less ink to print based on the thickness of the lines and the size of the font.  Recent reports have indicated that because some fonts use less ink, fewer new printer cartridges will need to be purchased resulting in reduced printing costs.  For example, recently the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay made a switch to Century Gothic, and the university expects to save $5,000 to $10,000 per year as a result of the font switch.
