SYNOPSIS

     Requires electric public utilities to provide portable emergency power generators to affected area during certain power outages.

An Act requiring electric public utilities to provide certain equipment during certain power outages and supplementing Title 48 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  As used in this section:

     "Affected area" means the entire geographic area that has lost electrical service due to a power outage lasting six or more hours.

     "Board" means the Board of Public Utilities or any successor agency.

     "Electric public utility" means a public utility, as that term is defined in R.S.48:2-13, that distributes electricity to end users within this State.

     "Power outage" means any disruption in service provided by an electric public utility.

     b.    (1)  In the event of a power outage lasting for six or more hours, the electric public utility responsible for providing the service that is interrupted by a power outage shall provide portable emergency power generators by the end of the sixth hour to each affected area to ensure all residents are able to have their power temporarily restored through the remaining duration of the power outage.

     (2)   The electric public utility shall provide portable emergency power generators in an amount necessary to restore temporary power to the affected area from the end of the sixth hour through the remaining duration of the power outage, which amount shall be determined by the electric public utility.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires electric public utilities to provide portable emergency power generators to affected areas during power outages that last for six hours or more.  The electric public utility is required to provide portable emergency power generators by the end of the sixth hour in an amount necessary to restore temporary power to the affected area until the end of the power outage.  The electric public utility is required to determine the amount of portable emergency power generators necessary to restore temporary power to the affected area from the end of the sixth hour through the remaining duration of the power outage.
