SYNOPSIS

     Requires written notification of advanced placement courses to parents of students with disability; prohibits exclusion from advanced placement courses on basis of disability.

An Act concerning advanced placement courses and supplementing chapter 46 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  A school district shall annually provide written notification to the parent or guardian of a student with disabilities of the availability of advanced placement courses offered by the school district.  The written notice shall include the following:

     (1)   the name of the course;

     (2)   a description of the course material; and

     (3)   information on any prerequisite requirements needed to enroll in the course.

     b.    A school district shall not exclude a student with a disability from participating in an advanced placement course on the basis of the student's disability.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires a school district to annually provide written notification of the availability of advanced placement courses offered by the school district to the parent or guardian of a student with disabilities.  The bill requires the written notification to include: (1) the name of the course; (2) a description of the course material; and (3) information on any prerequisite requirements needed to enroll in the course.

     The bill also prohibits a school district from excluding a student with a disability from participating in an advanced placement course on the basis of the student's disability.
