SYNOPSIS

Designates April 2010 as "Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer Awareness Month."

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Concurrent Resolution designating April  2010 as "Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of New Jersey.

Whereas, In 2008, about 35,310 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer were diagnosed in the United States; and

Whereas, Oral and oropharyngeal cancer is one of only a few cancers that has not seen a significant reduction in mortality rates in the last 40 years; more than 50% of the people diagnosed with oral and oropharyngeal cancer die of the disease within five years; and

Whereas, African-American males and other minority groups have a disproportionately higher rate of advanced oral and oropharyngeal cancer at the time of diagnosis; and

Whereas, Early detection is the most effective strategy for increasing the five-year survival rate for those patients suffering with oral and oropharyngeal cancer; presently, only one-third of all cases of oral and oropharyngeal cancer are diagnosed in the early, localized stage; and

Whereas, Education, prevention, and early detection are proven to greatly improve treatment outcomes for, and reduce health care costs associated with, oral and oropharyngeal cancer; when discovered in its early stage, oral and oropharyngeal cancer is 90% curable; and

Whereas, The Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer Workgroup of the Task Force on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, and Treatment in New Jersey, in cooperation with the Oral Cancer Consortium, conducts free public oral cancer screenings and education every April throughout the State of New Jersey; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey (the Senate concurring):

     1.    This House hereby designates the month of April  2010 as "Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of New Jersey in order to raise public awareness about the risk factors associated with oral and oropharyngeal cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment, and help reduce the number of people battling this type of cancer both in New Jersey and throughout the United States.

     2.    The Governor is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe "Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer Awareness Month" with appropriate activities and programs.

     3.    A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and the President of the Senate and attested by the Clerk of the General Assembly and the Secretary of the Senate, shall be transmitted to the Task Force on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, and Treatment in New Jersey and the Oral Cancer Consortium.
