Designates October of each year as "Humanities Month" in New Jersey.

A Joint Resolution designating October of each year as "Humanities Month" in New Jersey.
Whereas, The arts and humanities provide a vast array of opportunities to learn about culture and express individuality; and
Whereas, By providing entertainment and insight, as well as stimulating minds, the arts and humanities play a vital role in society and the lives of every citizen of New Jersey; and
Whereas, The arts and humanities allow for an appreciation and understanding of cultures across the globe; and
Whereas, Inspiring to all generations, the arts and humanities foster connections across time; and
Whereas, As a therapeutic outlet, the arts and humanities are valuable tools for healing and self-expression; and
Whereas, Creativity should be celebrated and encouraged in order to develop new strategies, tactics, and methods for solving everyday problems and issues; and
Whereas, The arts and humanities challenge ways of thinking, opening up avenues of discussion and facilitating dialogues across cultures; and
Whereas, The economy of this State benefits from the myriad of jobs, services, and tourism opportunities provided by the arts and humanities; and
Whereas, New Jersey has a rich history of the arts including being home to the first American composers, the first African-American recording artist, the first American sculptor, and as the birthplace of motion pictures; and
Whereas, New Jersey's theaters, museums, historic sites, concert halls, and arts organizations deliver to the entire State opportunities that celebrate and illuminate the arts and humanities for all to enjoy; and
Whereas, National Arts and Humanities Month has been celebrated in the month of October since 1993; and
Whereas, The establishment of October of each year as "Humanities Month" in New Jersey will serve to remind and encourage citizens of this State to engage with the arts and humanities, enriching the lives of all citizens; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The month of October of each year is designated as "Humanities Month" in New Jersey to recognize and celebrate the benefits the arts and humanities provide to the citizens of this State.
2. The Governor is respectfully requested to annually issue a proclamation recognizing October as "Humanities Month" in New Jersey and calling upon institutions of learning and culture to observe the month with appropriate activities and programs.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This joint resolution designates October of each year as "Humanities Month" in New Jersey. The arts and humanities provide opportunities for learning, self-expression, and reflection and challenge individuals to obtain new perspectives. The arts and humanities help people to understand different cultures and allow people to connect across space and time.
The State of New Jersey has a rich artistic history and many cultural offerings in which citizens of this State can participate and enjoy. The arts and humanities also benefit the economy and the tourism industry and provide a starting point for conversations and personal growth.
