     Recognizes first Sunday in May as World Laughter Day in New Jersey.

A Joint Resolution recognizing the first Sunday in May of each year as World Laughter Day in New Jersey and supplementing Title 36 of the Revised Statutes.

 

Whereas, World Laughter Day was created in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria as a positive manifestation for world peace and is intended to build a global consciousness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter; and

Whereas, Psychologist and author Steve Wilson was instrumental in bringing World Laughter Day to the United States in 2001; and

Whereas, Thousands of people throughout the world participate in World Laughter Day activities on the first Sunday in May each year; and

Whereas, The gatherings typically culminate in a peace march and provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and enjoy each others' company; and

Whereas, The medical benefits of laughter have been documented by numerous studies including one conducted by cardiologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center; and

Whereas, For the past six years, World Laughter Day has been celebrated by individuals in New Jersey; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper that the State recognize the first Sunday in May of each year as World Laughter Day in New Jersey and encourage its citizens to participate in events and take the opportunity to engage in activities to foster peace and fellowship; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    The first Sunday in May in each year is recognized as "World Laughter Day" in New Jersey.  The Governor shall annually issue a proclamation recognizing the first Sunday in May of each year as World Laughter Day in New Jersey and, with the Legislature, call upon all citizens of the State to celebrate this day with appropriate activities and programs.

 

     2.    This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This joint resolution recognizes the first Sunday in May of each year as World Laughter Day in New Jersey.  Since being founded in India in 1998, this celebration has spread to the United States and throughout the world.  A key purpose of this event is to promote peace and fellowship through laughter.
