SYNOPSIS

     Designates third full week in April of each year as "Infertility Awareness Week" in New Jersey.

A Joint Resolution designating the third full week in April of each year as "Infertility Awareness Week" in New Jersey.

 

Whereas, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in eight couples suffer from infertility; and

Whereas, Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year or longer of trying to have a child; and

Whereas, Infertility affects women and men equally, with male infertility as a factor in roughly 50 percent of all infertility cases; and

Whereas, In the United States, nine percent of men and 11 percent of women have experienced fertility issues; and

Whereas, Infertility can cause psychological distress, emotional stress, and financial difficulties for couples, who can experience feelings of anger, guilt, sadness, depression, anxiety, and a loss of self-confidence and self-esteem; and

Whereas, The most common types of fertility treatment are in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI); and

Whereas, The average cost of IVF in the United States is currently $11,000 to $12,000 for one cycle, while the average cost of IUI in the United States is $300 to $1,000; and

Whereas, Raising awareness about infertility can remove barriers to care; and

Whereas, Educating others on infertility can remove the stigma and increase empathy and sympathy towards those facing infertility problems; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper this house to designate the third full week in April of each year as "Infertility Awareness Week" in New Jersey; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.  The third full week in April of each year is designated as "Infertility Awareness Week" in the State of New Jersey.

 

     2.  The Governor is requested to annually issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and citizens of this State to observe "Infertility Awareness Week" with appropriate activities and programs.

 

     3.  This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This joint resolution designates the third full week in April of each year as "Infertility Awareness Week" in New Jersey.

     According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in eight couples suffer from infertility.  Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year or longer of trying to have a child.
