SYNOPSIS
Congratulates first New Jersey native to win NASCAR Cup Series championship Martin Truex Jr. for winning 2017 championship.

A Joint Resolution congratulating Martin Truex Jr., the first New Jersey native to win the NASCAR Cup Series championship, for winning the 2017 championship.
Whereas, This November, race car driver Martin Truex Jr. of Mayetta (Stafford Township), Ocean County, and the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing team won the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series championship; and
Whereas, While growing up in New Jersey, Mr. Truex had victorious races at New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt (Plumsted Township), Ocean County, and Wall Stadium Speedway in Wall Township, Monmouth County, including winning the Wall Stadium Turkey Derby; and
Whereas, Mr. Truex is the first NASCAR Cup Series champion from New Jersey; and
Whereas, The NASCAR Cup Series, an annual series held since 1949, is the premier series for stock car racing; and
Whereas, Despite facing numerous personal challenges, Mr. Truex had a dominant 2017 racing season, leading 2,253 laps and winning eight of the 36 races in the Cup Series; and
Whereas, James Watson, a crew member of Mr. Truex's team, passed away suddenly during the 2017 season and team owner Barney Visser suffered a heart attack during the final weeks of the season; and
Whereas, Nevertheless, Mr. Truex had a top five finish in 19 races during the 2017 Cup Series, including in nine of the final 10 races; and
Whereas, Mr. Truex's dominant 2017 season included advancing through three rounds of playoffs to secure one of the four championship driver spots eligible to win the Cup Series in the championship race; and
Whereas, On November 19, 2017, Mr. Truex was able to hold off Kyle Busch in the final laps of the championship race to win the championship in thrilling and inspiring fashion; and
Whereas, Following the season, Mr. Truex and his longtime girlfriend Sherry Pollex were named recipients of the prestigious Myers Brothers Award for their charitable work involving pediatric and ovarian cancer and their display of strength and concern for others while facing adversity; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper for this State to congratulate Martin Truex Jr., the first New Jersey native to win the NASCAR Cup Series championship, for winning the 2017 championship; now, therefore,

Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of
the State of New Jersey:
1. The Governor and Legislature of the State of New Jersey congratulate Mr. Martin Truex Jr., the first New Jersey native to win the NASCAR Cup Series championship, for winning the 2017 championship.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly or the Secretary of the Senate to Mr. Martin Truex Jr.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This joint resolution congratulates New Jersey native Martin Truex Jr. for winning the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series championship, the first person from New Jersey to win the Cup Series championship. Although faced with serious adversity throughout the 2017 season, Mr. Truex dominated the Cup Series with eight wins and 19 top 10 finishes.
During the 2017 season, a crew member from Mr. Truex's team passed away suddenly and the owner of Mr. Truex's team suffered a heart attack. Despite these events and other personal challenges, Mr. Truex's 2017 season culminated with a championship win in the final race of the Cup Series.
