SYNOPSIS

Urges International Hydrographic Organization and U.S. government to co-designate body of water between Korean peninsula and nation of Japan as "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan."

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the International Hydrographic Organization and the United States government to co-designate the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the nation of Japan as the "East Sea" and the "Sea of Japan."

Whereas, The International Hydrographic Organization is an organization that helps set international standards on the naming and delineation of bodies of water; and

Whereas, The name of the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the nation of Japan, currently recognized as the "Sea of Japan," serves as a reminder to many Koreans and Korean-Americans of the colonization of the Korean peninsula by Japan during the 20th century; and

Whereas, Both the International Hydrographic Organization and the United States government are in the position to bring about a change in the name of this body of water; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper for this House to serve as a voice for the concerned residents of this State and to call on the International Hydrographic Organization and the United States government to co-designate the body of water as the "East Sea" and the "Sea of Japan"; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    a.  This House respectfully urges the International Hydrographic Organization to co-designate the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the nation of Japan as the "East Sea" and the "Sea of Japan."

     b.    This House respectfully urges the United States government to co-designate the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the nation of Japan as the "East Sea" and the "Sea of Japan."

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Directing Committee of the International Hydrographic Bureau within the International Hydrographic Organization, the Chair of the Working Group on the Revision S-23 within the International Hydrographic Organization, the United States Secretary of State, and the United States Board on Geographic Names.

STATEMENT

This resolution respectfully urges the International Hydrographic Organization and the United States government to co-designate the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the nation of Japan as the "East Sea" and the "Sea of Japan."
