     Commemorates Greek Independence Day.

An Assembly Resolution commemorating Greek Independence Day.

 

Whereas, Greek Independence Day is annually observed on March 25th; and

Whereas, March 25, 2022 marks the 201st anniversary of Greece's independence from the Ottoman Empire following the Greek revolution of 1821; and

Whereas, In a proclamation dated March 24, 2022 President Joseph R. Biden acknowledged that, in forming a government that reflected the spirit of America and united the nation around the core principles of liberty, justice and the rule of law that are the foundation of American democracy, the founders looked to Greece - referred to in the proclamation as, "the birthplace of democracy;" and

Whereas, According to data obtained from the United States Census Bureau, the New York City Metropolitan Area, including Long Island, New York, and Bergen County, New Jersey, is home to the largest Greek population in the United States; and

Whereas, New Jersey ranks as one of the top five states with the highest concentrations of Americans of Hellenic, or Greek, ancestry; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Hellenic American Heritage Commission is authorized to study, recognize and share information on Hellenic heritage, culture, and history as it relates to Americans of Hellenic ancestry and their contributions to the State of New Jersey; and

Whereas, The Commission coordinates an annual Hellenic Heritage Month celebration in March; and

Whereas, The Hellenic Federation of New Jersey was organized for the purpose of assisting its member organizations and coordinating their activities in order to promote, preserve and protect the Hellenic culture, heritage, language and history, as well as the Democratic Hellenic and American ideals; and

Whereas, Numerous annual events, in and around New Jersey, including in Bergen, Middlesex, Burlington, and Camden counties, mark Greek culture with parades, festivals and commemorative celebrations of Greek art, literature, books, food and culture; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.  This resolution commemorates Greek Independence Day.

 

     2.  Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Governor, to the New Jersey Hellenic American Heritage Commission, and to the Hellenic Federation of New Jersey.
