Recognizes strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan, congratulates President-elect Dr. Tsai, Ing-wen and Vice President-elect Dr. Lai, Ching-te.

An Assembly Resolution 1[commemorating the New Jersey-Taiwan sister state relationship and recognizing the importance of a strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan] recognizing the strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan, and congratulating President-elect Dr. Tsai, Ing-wen and Vice President-elect Dr. Lai, Ching-te1.
1[Whereas, The United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are bonded by their shared commitment to democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and a free market economy; and
Whereas, New Jersey and Taiwan have enjoyed a close and prosperous affiliation since 1989, when they entered into a sister state relationship; and
Whereas, In 2019, New Jersey exported approximately $460 million worth of products to Taiwan, making Taiwan the 5th largest export market for the State in Asia, and both sides are committed to strengthening bilateral economic ties; and
Whereas, More than 100 Taiwanese companies have invested in New Jersey, including Formosa Plastic Corporation, Eva Air, Evergreen Marine, Yang Mine Marine Transport, and AAEON Electronics, Inc., all of which helped to create jobs in this State; and
Whereas, Individuals from Taiwan who have immigrated to this country and to New Jersey have contributed greatly to the State's diversity, thriving international culture, and economic development; and
Whereas, Taiwan is the 10th largest trading partner of the United States, with bilateral trade totaling $85.5 billion in 2019; and
Whereas, The United States Congress passed the landmark Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) in 1979 to sustain a close, bilateral relationship as well as to advance mutual security and commercial interests between the United States and Taiwan; and
Whereas, The TRA has served as the cornerstone of U.S.-Taiwan relations and has helped to preserve peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait; and
Whereas, The United States has assisted Taiwan in participating in the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and will continue to support Taiwan's meaningful participation in these and other international organizations; now, therefore,]1

Whereas, New Jersey and Taiwan have enjoyed a close and prosperous affiliation since 1989, when they entered into a sister state relationship; and
Whereas, On January 11, 2020, Taiwan held yet another successful election of the president and vice president, re-electing Dr. Tsai, Ing-wen as president and electing Dr. Lai, Ching-te as vice president, a demonstration of Taiwan's vibrant democracy; and
Whereas, Taiwan is the 10th largest trading partner of the United States, with bilateral trade totaling $85.5 billion in 2019; and
Whereas, In 2019, New Jersey exported approximately $460 million worth of products to Taiwan, making Taiwan the 5th largest export market for the State in Asia, and both sides are committed to strengthening bilateral economic ties; and
Whereas, In order to strengthen bilateral trade with the United States, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has expressed its wish to sign a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the United States; and
Whereas, New Jersey is home to a growing number of Taiwanese companies, including Formosa Plastics Corporation, Eva Air, Evergreen Marine, Yang Ming Marine Transport, the Friendwell Group of Companies, and AAEON Electronic Inc., all of which helped to create jobs in this State; and
Whereas, Individuals from Taiwan who have immigrated to this country and to New Jersey have contributed greatly to the State's diversity, thriving international culture, and economic development; and
Whereas, The State of New Jersey and Taiwan signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning the issuance of driver licenses in 2019, creating greater convenience for the people on both sides and deepening relations between Taiwan and the State of New Jersey; and
Whereas, The United States has assisted Taiwan in participating in the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and will continue to support Taiwan's meaningful participation in these and other international organizations; and
Whereas, This Assembly supports enhancing the relations between New Jersey and Taiwan, and it is fitting and proper that this Assembly congratulates President Dr. Tsai, Ing-wen on her re-election as the president of Taiwan and Vice President-elect Dr. Lai, Ching-te on his election to office; now, therefore,1

Resolved by the General Assembly of the State
of New Jersey:
1. This House 1[commemorates the New Jersey-Taiwan sister state relationship, and recognizes the importance of a strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan, and reiterates its support for a closer economic and trade partnership between the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan)] recognizes the strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan, and congratulates President-elect Dr. Tsai, Ing-wen and Vice President-elect Dr. Lai, Ching-te1.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the President and Vice-President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and to the Ambassador, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York.
