SYNOPSIS

     Honors and celebrates life and career of New Jersey resident James Gandolfini.

An Assembly Resolution honoring and celebrating the life and career of James Gandolfini.

 

Whereas, On June 19, 2013, James Gandolfini, Jr. died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 51 while traveling in Italy; and

Whereas, Born in Westwood, New Jersey in 1961 and raised in Park Ridge, Mr. Gandolfini spent his formative years in Bergen County; and

Whereas, After graduating from Park Ridge High School in 1979, Mr. Gandolfini attended Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick and graduated with a degree in communications in 1983; and

Whereas, Upon discovering a talent for acting, Mr. Gandolfini worked as an actor for several years before landing the role of Tony Soprano, an emotionally complicated character, in the critically acclaimed HBO series "The Sopranos"; and

Whereas, Mr. Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony Soprano made him a household name and earned him three Emmy awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards; and

Whereas, Although best-known for his television role on "The Sopranos," Mr. Gandolfini also appeared in movies including "True Romance," "Zero Dark Thirty," and "Not Fade Away," and on Broadway in "A Streetcar Named Desire," and "God of Carnage," for which he was nominated for a Tony Award; and

Whereas, In addition to his onscreen performances, Mr. Gandolfini produced the documentary movies "Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq" and "Wartorn 1861-2010" about the history of post-traumatic stress in the military; and

Whereas, Mr. Gandolfini continued to support his alma mater throughout his life by appearing in Rutgers commercials, attending football games, and supporting the University's fundraising efforts; and

Whereas, In 2004, Mr. Gandolfini was inducted into the Rutgers University Hall of Distinguished Alumni, in recognition of his acclaimed career and steadfast support of the University; and

Whereas, Throughout his life, Mr. Gandolfini never went far from his New Jersey roots, owning homes in Chester Township in Morris County and more recently in Tewksbury Township in Hunterdon County; and

Whereas, Mr. Gandolfini is survived by his wife, Deborah Lin Gandolfini, daughter, Liliana, and son, Michael; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper that this House honor the life of  James Gandolfini, celebrate his outstanding career, and remember the lifelong connection he had to the State of New Jersey; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House honors the life of James Gandolfini, celebrates his outstanding career in the entertainment industry, and remembers his lifelong connection to the State of New Jersey.

 

     2.    A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be presented to the wife of James Gandolfini, Deborah Lin Gandolfini.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This Assembly resolution honors the life of James Gandolfini, celebrates his outstanding career in the entertainment industry, and remembers his lifelong connection to the State of New Jersey.  On June 19, 2013, Mr. Gandolfini died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 51 while traveling in Italy. 

     Mr. Gandolfini was born and raised in New Jersey and never went far from his New Jersey roots.  He was a graduate of Rutgers University and was inducted into the Rutgers University Hall of Distinguished Alumni, in recognition of his acclaimed career and steadfast support of the University.
