CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
As introduced.
An Assembly Resolution congratulating the United States Men's National Team on its accomplishments at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Whereas, Soccer, known to the rest of the world as football, is the most popular sport in the world today; and
Whereas, Every four years, teams from around the world engage in a thrilling and intense soccer competition, known as the World Cup, to determine which country has the best team in the sport; and
Whereas, This year the competition was held in Brazil, and the 64 games played there were seen by observers as exciting, enthralling, captivating and compelling, perhaps the best World Cup in memory in the opinion of many fans; and
Whereas, The United States fielded a team of immensely talented athletes who were able to progress to the second round of the competition, known as the knock-out round, because of the determination, skill and grit of each member of the team; and
Whereas, More than during any other World Cup competition, Americans from all walks of life took enormous interest in the games in which the United States team played, as evidenced by the millions of people who stopped working to watch the games in their offices, in stores, or in public places in many of the nation's largest cities, as well as those thousands of Americans who traveled to different parts of Brazil to watch the games in person; and
Whereas, In fact, the championship game between Germany and Argentina was the most watched soccer game in United States' history, with the English-language broadcast drawing approximately 17.3 million television viewers and 657,000 online viewers, and the Spanish-language broadcast drawing 9.2 million television viewers and 99,000 online viewers; and
Whereas, This great welling of interest in the World Cup in the United States has at its roots the passion for the game engendered by the thousands of American boys and girls who grew up playing soccer in schools across the country; and
Whereas, The explosion of popular interest in the game, and the ability and celebrity of the members of the United States team, has served to inspire the thousands of young men and women who play soccer in towns and cities across New Jersey and this country; and
Whereas, In this State, interest in the World Cup was heightened by the fact that four key players on the United States men's national team are from New Jersey: Goal Keeper Tim Howard (North Brunswick, Middlesex County), Forward Jozy Altidore (Livingston, Essex County), Mid-Fielder Alejandro Bedoya (Englewood, Bergen County), and Mid-Fielder Michael Bradley (Princeton, Mercer County); and
Whereas, Also to be noted is the great influence and importance of U.S. Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann, a former champion player with immense skill and dedication to the sport, whose experienced and winning hand guided the team and spurred interest in soccer in this country and this State; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper that this House recognize and congratulate the United States Men's National Team on its accomplishments at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House congratulates the United States Men's National Team on its accomplishments at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to each member of the United State Men's National Team from New Jersey, Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann, United States Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati, and Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber.
