SYNOPSIS
Opposes elimination of motor vehicle safety inspections.

An Assembly Resolution opposing the elimination of motor vehicle safety inspections in the State of New Jersey.
Whereas, The State of New Jersey is the most congested state in the nation and our roads and highways are highly traveled each day by the citizens of this State; and
Whereas, New Jersey began conducting motor vehicle inspections in 1938 to ensure the safety of the numerous vehicles traveling on our roads and highways; and
Whereas, In April of this year, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission proposed eliminating the motor vehicle safety inspection program as a cost savings measure to the State; and
Whereas, The motor vehicle safety inspection program is an effective and thorough method for identifying motor vehicles in disrepair and out of compliance with applicable safety standards, thereby minimizing motor vehicle accidents and injuries to those traveling on New Jersey's roads and highways; and
Whereas, It is in the interest of public safety to continue New Jersey's effective safety inspection program; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House opposes the recent proposal by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to eliminate motor vehicle safety inspections from the State's mandated inspection program. The General Assembly urges the Governor, the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission, and the Commissioner of Transportation to continue the State's safety inspection program in the interest of public safety.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Governor, the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission, and the Commissioner of Transportation.
STATEMENT
This Assembly Resolution opposes the elimination of the State's motor vehicle safety inspection program and urges the Governor, the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission, and the Commissioner of Transportation to continue the State's safety inspection program in the interest of public safety. The State's motor vehicle safety inspection program is an effective and thorough method for identifying motor vehicles in disrepair and out of compliance with applicable safety standards, minimizing motor vehicle accidents and injuries to those traveling on New Jersey's roads and highways.
