     Requires all new State buildings to have solar or geothermal energy systems, where feasible.

An Act concerning renewable energy systems in new State buildings and supplementing Title 52 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  The Division of Property Management and Construction in the Department of the Treasury shall require that all newly constructed State buildings include the installation and operation of renewable energy systems powered by solar and geothermal energy sources, where feasible.  Renewable energy systems shall be designed to provide all or a portion of the heating, cooling, or general electrical energy needs of these buildings.

     b.    As used in this section:

     "Geothermal energy" means heat derived from the earth that can be harnessed for electricity production, direct heat, or heat pump use.

     "Solar energy" means energy which has recently originated in the sun, including direct and indirect solar radiation and intermediate solar energy from wind and sea thermal gradients.

     "State building" means a building that is built, owned, and operated by a State agency.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill would require that, where feasible, the construction of all new State buildings include the installation of renewable energy systems powered by solar and geothermal energy sources.
