An Act concerning the use of a public school as a polling place and supplementing chapter 36 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. On the day of any election, the board of education of a school district shall not hold classes whenever a public school is used as a polling place. The board may use the day for in-service training or professional development for the teaching staff members employed by the school district.
2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall first apply to the general election held in November of 2021.
STATEMENT
This bill would prohibit boards of education from holding classes whenever a public school is used as a polling place on the day of an election. The board is permitted to use the day for in-service training or professional development for the teaching staff members employed by the school district. The purpose of this bill would be to ensure the safety of students at a time when an increased number of individuals from the general public will be entering school grounds.
