SYNOPSIS

     Exempts from sales and use tax sales of carbon monoxide detectors and any device or equipment sold for residential use to detect, warn of, abate, or extinguish fires.

An Act providing a sales and use tax exemption for sales of certain fire safety equipment and carbon monoxide detectors and warning systems, supplementing P.L.1966, c.30 (C.54:32B-1 et seq.)

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Receipts from sales of any smoke alarm, smoke detector, fire alarm, heat-activated sprinkler system, fire extinguisher, or other device or equipment sold for residential use to detect, warn of, abate, or extinguish fires, or to detect or warn of the presence of carbon monoxide, are exempt from the tax imposed under the "Sales and Use Tax Act", P.L.1966, c.30 (C.54:32B-1 et seq.), provided that the device or equipment complies with the most recent Underwriters Laboratories standards or equivalent at the time that the sale is made.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately and apply to sales occurring on or after the first day of the fourth month following enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill exempts from the New Jersey sales and use tax sales of smoke alarms, smoke detectors, fire alarms, heat-activated sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, or any other devices or equipment sold for residential use to detect, warn of, abate, or extinguish fires, or to detect or warn of the presence of carbon monoxide.
