SYNOPSIS
Designates Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market as New Jersey State German Christmas Market.

An Act designating the Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market as the New Jersey State German Christmas Market.
Whereas, In December 2001, the first Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market was hosted by the Lake Mohawk Country Club in Sparta, New Jersey, with the intent to raise funds for the community, to be disbursed to local charities, civic service organizations, and educational institutions; and
Whereas, Immigrants of German descent settled around Lake Mohawk and its countryside, instilling their culture and heritage throughout the area; and
Whereas, The group of individuals who formed the Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market felt nostalgic for the German Christmas Market experience they grew up with and established the tradition in Sparta; and
Whereas, The Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market provides an open public cultural event that fosters an appreciation of the holiday spirit and offers unique gift items, traditional foods, and festivities, such as hand-crafted pottery and woodwork, German sausages and goulash, and singing and dancing; and
Whereas, The planning and execution of this event requires a community-wide coordination of many unpaid volunteers, civic service organizations, local businesses, local and county governments, and police department; and
Whereas, In 2013, the event attracted approximately 18,000 people, and has since been recognized as the largest and most attended German Christmas Market in the State; and
Whereas, The Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market will continue to grow and expand each year with the addition of beautifully designed and constructed German huts; and
Whereas, The event draws an increasing number of visitors from beyond the tri-state area and has become an important tourist attraction for the State during the month of December; now, therefore,
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market is designated as the New Jersey State German Christmas Market.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill designates the Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market as the New Jersey State German Christmas Market.
