STATEMENT

This bill amends the FY 2008 Appropriations Act by providing a grant of $470,000 to the Deal Lake Commission to finance necessary maintenance projects for Deal Lake in Monmouth County.  Although the Department of Environmental Protection owns Deal Lake, the Deal Lake Commission, a public corporation consisting of seven municipalities bordering the 158 acre lake, is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep.  Many longstanding projects needed to maintain the lake's environmental health have been deferred because of difficulties in obtaining public funds and financing.

The grant provided by the bill would allow the commission to begin three high priority projects that are necessary for the long term health of the lake.  These projects entail flood control, management of nonpoint source pollution, and the hydro-raking of 14 acres of lake-bottom to remove weeds and leaves built up over five decades.
