STATEMENT
This bill permits the appointment of Class Three special law enforcement officers by county sheriffs.
Under current law, a local unit, which is defined as any municipality or county having established a regular police force, may appoint special law enforcement officers to perform certain duties. Current law provides that Class Three special law enforcement officers are authorized to exercise full powers and duties similar to those of a permanent, regularly appointed full-time police officer while providing security at a public or nonpublic school or a county college on the school or college premises during hours when the public or nonpublic school or county college is normally in session or when occupied by students, teachers, or professors.
Under the provisions of this bill, in addition to a local unit, a county sheriff would also be permitted to appoint Class Three special law enforcement officers to provide security at schools or county colleges.
