SYNOPSIS

     Revises effective date of "New Jersey Fair Play Act."

An Act concerning student-athletes at certain institutions of higher education and amending P.L.2020, c.83.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Section 5 of P.L.2020, c.83 is amended to read as follows:

     5.    This act shall take effect [immediately and shall first be applicable in the fifth academic year following the date of enactment] July 1, 2021.

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill amends the effective date of the "New Jersey Fair Play Act," which is an act that allows certain collegiate student-athletes to earn compensation for the use of their name, image, or likeness. 

     As originally enacted in September 2020, the provisions of the "New Jersey Fair Play Act" are effective immediately, but are not applicable until the fifth academic year following the date of enactment.  This effectively placed a five-year moratorium on collegiate student-athletes earning compensation for the use of their name, image, or likeness under the provisions of the act.

     This bill amends the effective date of the "New Jersey Fair Play Act" to provide that the provisions of the act take effect on July 1, 2021.
