An Act concerning civics instruction in high school and supplementing chapter 7C of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, each board of education shall provide a United States civics course for all 11th grade students. The course shall prepare students to become effective citizens, voters, and members of their communities. The course shall include content on the fundamental principles and processes of democracy and the governments of the United States, New Jersey, and counties and municipalities located in the State.
2. Beginning with the 2020-2021 grade 11 class, the State Board of Education shall require that the local graduation requirements adopted by a board of education include one course in United States civics, as developed pursuant to section 1 of this act.
3. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill provides that beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, each board of education must provide a United States civics course for all 11th grade students. The course must prepare students to become effective citizens, voters, and members of their communities. The course must include content on the fundamental principles and processes of democracy, and the governments of the United States, New Jersey, and counties and municipalities located in the State.
The bill also provides that beginning with the 2020-2021 grade 11 class, the State Board of Education must require that the local graduation requirements adopted by a board of education include one course in United States civics, as developed pursuant to the bill's provisions.
