SYNOPSIS
Recognizes and honors contributions of Malayalee people of NJ.

A Concurrent Resolution recognizing and honoring the contributions of the Malayalee people of New Jersey.
Whereas, The Malayalee people are a multiethnic linguistic group originating from the present-day state of Kerala in India; and
Whereas, The Malayalee people are identified as native speakers of the Malayalam language, which is classified as part of the Dravidian family of languages; and
Whereas, A large number of Malayalee people have emigrated to the United States and according to the 2012 census, there were 644,097 people with Malayalee heritage in the United States with the highest concentration in Bergen County, New Jersey; and
Whereas, Malayalee people have played an integral role in the progress and development of our State, with contributions in science, medicine, literature, art, education, business, public service, and religion; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper for the State of New Jersey to recognize and honor the contributions of the Malayalee people who enrich our State with intellectual, linguistic and cultural diversity; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey (the General Assembly concurring):
1. The Legislature of the State of New Jersey recognizes and honors the contributions of the Malayalee people in the State of New Jersey.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly or the Secretary of the Senate to the county board of commissioners of each of the 21 counties and Malayalee cultural organizations in the State of New Jersey.
3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This concurrent resolution recognizes and honors the contributions of the Malayalee people in the State of New Jersey.
The Malayalee people are identified as native speakers of the Malayalam language, which is classified as part of the Dravidian family of languages. A large number of Malayalee people have emigrated to the United States and according to the 2012 census, there were 644,097 people with Malayalee heritage in the United States with the highest concentration in Bergen County, New Jersey.
Malayalee people have played an integral role in the progress and development of our State, with contributions in science, medicine, literature, art, education, business, public service, and religion.
