SYNOPSIS

Urges Congress to restore Memorial Day to May 30.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel

A Senate Resolution urging Congress to restore Memorial Day to May 30, its traditional day of observance.

Whereas, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country; and

Whereas, Originally established in 1868 in Waterloo, New York, Memorial Day was traditionally observed each year on May 30 to honor servicemen and woman killed in war; and

Whereas, The solemnity of this occasion was traditionally observed with black streamers signifying mourning and flags flown at half mast; and

Whereas, Approximately thirty years ago, Congress decided that this federally recognized holiday would be observed on the last Monday in May so that it is celebrated in conjunction with a three-day weekend; and

Whereas, Memorial Day weekend has come to be associated with barbeques, beaches and the celebration of summer; and

Whereas, Lost is the original intent in designating a day of rest to solemnly observe the sacrifice and death of those who have gone before us and fought for the freedom of our nation; and

Whereas, It is fitting and appropriate for this House to urge Congress to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day; and

Whereas, S.61, introduced into the Senate of the United States on January 22, 2001 by Senator Inouye, would restore Memorial Day to its traditional day of observance; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House urges Congress to restore Memorial Day to May 30, its traditional day of observance.

     2.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the President and the Vice President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives, and each member of Congress elected from this State.
