SYNOPSIS

Urges National Football League to select New Meadowlands Stadium as site of Super Bowl XLVIII.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Senate Resolution urging the National Football League to select the new football stadium located in the Meadowlands as the site of Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014.

Whereas, The New York Giants and New York Jets have nearly completed the construction of a new $1.6 billion football stadium in the Meadowlands, East Rutherford, where the two teams will begin playing their home games at the start of 2010-2011 National Football League season; and

Whereas, Upon completion, the New Meadowlands Stadium will have a seating capacity of 82,500 and will set the standard for venue excellence with state-of-the-art technology, comfort, and amenities; and

Whereas, In December 2009, the National Football League Super Bowl Advisory Committee granted the New Meadowlands Stadium Company, a joint venture of the Giants and Jets that will operate the new venue, preliminary approval to bid to host Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014 even though the location of the stadium violates the so-called "weather rule" that requires Super Bowl host regions to have a minimum average temperature of 50 degrees around the time of the Super Bowl or feature a climate-controlled indoor stadium; and

Whereas, This preliminary approval to bid recognizes the unique opportunity to celebrate the opening of the new stadium and serves as an acknowledgment of the tremendous history and heritage of football in the New York-New Jersey region, which has never hosted a Super Bowl; and

Whereas, A Super Bowl at the New Meadowlands Stadium would bring national and international attention to New Jersey and provide an opportunity to showcase the rich culture and history of this State and the many world-class attractions it has to offer; and

Whereas, The large amount of hotel space in surrounding cities, including New York City, the new rail link from Midtown Manhattan to the sports complex, and its proximity to an abundance of venues that could host parties and other events serve to make the Meadowlands an ideal location for an event like the Super Bowl; and

Whereas, The economic benefits of a Super Bowl in this State would be substantial, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity and producing hundreds of jobs that will be needed to host the game; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House urges the National Football League to select the new football stadium in the Meadowlands in East Rutherford to serve as the site of Super Bowl XLVIII, which will be played in February 2014.

     2.    A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary thereof, shall be transmitted to the commissioner of the National Football League and to each member of the National Football League owners' Super Bowl Advisory Committee.

STATEMENT

This Senate resolution urges the National Football League (NFL) to select the new football stadium being constructed in the Meadowlands as the site of Super Bowl XLVIII, which will be played in 2014.

Beginning with the 2010-2011 NFL season, the New York Giants and New York Jets will begin playing their home games in a new, state-of-the-art football stadium located at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford.  In December 2009, the NFL Super Bowl Advisory Committee granted the New Meadowlands Stadium Company, the stadium's operator, preliminary approval to bid to host Super Bowl XLVIII even though the location of the new stadium violates the so-called "weather rule" requiring the Super Bowl to be played in a location where the average temperature is at least 50 degrees or in a climate-controlled venue.

The New York-New Jersey metropolitan area has never hosted a Super Bowl, notwithstanding the rich football tradition of this region.  The large amount of hotel space in surrounding cities, including New York City, the new rail link from Midtown Manhattan to the sports complex, and its proximity to an abundance of venues that could host parties and other events serve to make the Meadowlands an ideal location for an event like the Super Bowl.  Furthermore, the economic benefits of a Super Bowl in this State would be substantial, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity and producing hundreds of jobs that will be needed to host the game.
