SYNOPSIS

     Commemorates 29th anniversary of New Jersey-Taiwan sister state relationship and recognizes importance of strong and enduring relations between New Jersey and Taiwan.

A senate Resolution commemorating the 29th anniversary of the New Jersey-Taiwan sister state relationship and recognizing the importance of a strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan.

 

Whereas, The United State and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are bonded by their shared commitment to democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and a free market economy; and

Whereas, New Jersey and Taiwan have enjoyed a close and prosperous affiliation since 1989, when they entered into a sister state relationship; and

Whereas, In 2016, New Jersey exported approximately $502 million worth of products to Taiwan making Taiwan the 7th largest export market for the State in Asia, and both sides are committed to strengthening bilateral economic ties; and

Whereas, New Jersey is home to a growing number of Taiwanese companies, including Formosa Plastics Corporation, Eva Air, Evergreen Marine, Yang Ming Marine Transport, the Friendwell Group of Companies, and AAEON Electronic Inc., all of which helped to create jobs in this State; and

Whereas, Individuals from Taiwan who have immigrated to this country and to New Jersey have contributed greatly to the State's diversity, thriving international culture, and economic development; and

Whereas, The United States and Taiwan share a long-term and close economic relationship, with $68.2 billion in bilateral trade in 2017, making Taiwan the 11th largest trading partner of the United States; and

Whereas, The United States Congress passed the landmark Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) in 1979 to sustain a close, bilateral relationship as well as to advance mutual security and commercial interests between the United States and Taiwan; and

Whereas, The TRA has served as the cornerstone of U.S.-Taiwan relations and has helped to preserve peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait; and

Whereas, The United States has assisted Taiwan in participating in the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and will continue to support Taiwan's meaningful participation in these and other international organizations; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    This House commemorates the 29th anniversary of the New Jersey-Taiwan sister state relationship, and recognizes the importance of a strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan, and reiterates its support for a closer economic and trade partnership between the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

 

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to President Tsai Ing-wen of the Republic of China (Taiwan) through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and to Ambassador Lily L.W. Hsu, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This Senate resolution commemorates the 29th anniversary of the New Jersey-Taiwan sister state relationship, and recognizes the importance of a strong and enduring partnership between New Jersey and Taiwan, and reiterates its support for a closer economic and trade partnership between the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan).
