SYNOPSIS

     Recognizes State and national observance of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

A Senate Resolution recognizing the State and national observance of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

 

Whereas, Every 69 seconds, somewhere in the world, a women dies of breast cancer; every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer; and every 13 minutes, a woman loses her battle with the disease; and

Whereas, In 2010, in the United States, 207,090 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer; and 39,840 will die; and

Whereas, In 2010, in New Jersey, there will be 6,820 new diagnoses of, and 1,430 deaths from, breast cancer; and

Whereas, The "good news" is that breast cancer mortality has decreased by two percent each year for the past decade due to increased awareness, annual mammograms, earlier detection, and more effective treatments; and, currently, there are 2,500,000 breast cancer survivors in the United States alone - more survivors than for any other type of cancer; and

Whereas, Each year, the month of October is observed nationwide as "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month"; and

Whereas, The month of October in each year is designated as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of New Jersey pursuant to P.L.2005, J.R.7 (C.36:2-86); and

Whereas, Various organizations have provided, and are providing, critical services to the people of this State relating to breast cancer, including education and public awareness, preventive health, assistance with care, counseling, social services, and advocacy, as well as funding for innovative scientific research that is an essential component of the war against cancer; and their ongoing efforts on behalf of New Jerseyans are most laudatory and sincerely appreciated by this House and all the citizens of New Jersey; and

Whereas, The efforts of these organizations have made a major contribution to spreading breast cancer awareness to both women and men in all communities in this State through outreach, education, and screening programs, and have empowered women with the life-saving message of early detection and the importance of having annual mammograms; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    This House recognizes the State and national observance of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" during October, 2010, commends the various organizations in this State that have sought to defeat breast cancer and assist New Jerseyans who are coping with this disease, and extends its appreciation to these organizations during the observance of this month as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of New Jersey and "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month."


     2.    This House further urges the public officials and citizens of this State to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This resolution recognizes the State and national observance of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" during October, 2010, commends the various organizations in this State that have sought to defeat breast cancer and assist New Jerseyans who are coping with this disease, and extends its appreciation to these organizations during the observance of this month as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of New Jersey and "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month."  The resolution further urges the public officials and citizens of this State to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs.
