       AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in  relation  to  providing
         distinctive license plates for combat medics
         THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section 1. The vehicle and traffic law is  amended  by  adding  a  new
    2  section 404-x to read as follows:
    3    S  404-X.  DISTINCTIVE  PLATES FOR COMBAT MEDICS.  1. ANY COMBAT MEDIC
    4  RESIDING IN THIS STATE SHALL, UPON REQUEST, BE ISSUED  A  LICENSE  PLATE
    5  BEARING  THE  WORDS  "COMBAT  MEDIC". APPLICATION FOR SAID LICENSE PLATE
    6  SHALL BE FILED WITH THE COMMISSIONER IN SUCH  FORM  AND  DETAIL  AS  THE
    7  COMMISSIONER  SHALL  PRESCRIBE.  FOR  PURPOSES  OF THIS SECTION, "COMBAT
    8  MEDIC" SHALL MEAN A PERSON WHO SERVED OR IS SERVING IN THE ARMED  FORCES
    9  OF  THE  UNITED  STATES, WHO WAS AWARDED THE COMBAT MEDICAL BADGE AND IF
   10  DISCHARGED WAS DISCHARGED THEREFROM UNDER OTHER THAN DISHONORABLE CONDI-
   11  TIONS.
   12    2. THE DISTINCTIVE PLATE AUTHORIZED BY THIS SECTION  SHALL  BE  ISSUED
   13  UPON  PROOF,  SATISFACTORY  TO THE COMMISSIONER, THAT THE APPLICANT IS A
   14  WAR ON TERROR VETERAN.
   15    3. A DISTINCTIVE PLATE ISSUED PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION SHALL BE ISSUED
   16  IN THE SAME MANNER AS OTHER NUMBER PLATES UPON PAYMENT  OF  THE  REGULAR
   17  REGISTRATION FEE PRESCRIBED BY SECTION FOUR HUNDRED ONE OF THIS ARTICLE,
   18  PROVIDED,  HOWEVER,  THAT  AN  ADDITIONAL ONE-TIME SERVICE CHARGE OF TEN
   19  DOLLARS SHALL BE CHARGED FOR SUCH PLATE.
   20    S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
